April 7: John Roche Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, April 7, we welcome poet and organizer John Roche.

John Roche lives in Placitas, New Mexico, helping his wife Jules Nyquist run Jules’ Poetry Playhouse, edit Poetry Playhouse Publications, and hosts the monthly Kaktus Poetry open mic. He taught Literature and Creative Writing for decades at various colleges, retiring from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2019.

Roche was formerly President of Just Poets in Rochester, NY, member of the board of BOA Editions, chief organizer of the Black Mountain North Symposium, and an instigator of the annual Cloudburst Council poets' retreat in the Finger Lakes. Along with editing the five-volume Poets Speak series and other anthologies (including Mo' Joe), his own poetry collections include On Conesus, Topicalities, Road Ghosts, and The Joe Poems: The Continuing Saga of Joe the Poet. His newest book is Joe Rides Again: Further Adventures of Joe the Poet (FootHills Publishing 2020).

March 31: Coleen T. Houlihan Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, March 31, we welcome the long awaited return of poet Coleen T. Houlihan.

Coleen T. Houlihan began her career in writing on a picturesque day in a quaint Connecticut town. An only child who loved to read, her afternoons were often spent home leafing through dusty volumes passed down from her grandfather. Or she could be found in the local library, covertly reading all the books she'd been warned against such as Wifey by Blume or Go Ask Alice, salacious writing perfect for the budding adolescent. At Wellesley College, she focused on short stories and poetry, receiving her BA. She has featured at several poetry venues such as: Stone Soup, Best Sellers, A Tapestry of Voices, Sherman Café and the Walden Poetry Series. She has published poetry in Main Street Rag, Poesy, Bellowing Ark, The Alewife, The Wilderness House Literary Review, Ibbetson Street Press, Spoonful: A Gathering of Stone Soup Poets, MoJo! The Maps One Journal, Spare Change, as well as others.

Jason Wright is the Editor-In-Chief and founder of Oddball Magazine. He is the host of the Oddball Show podcast and has published two books, his third book Train of Thought 2: Almost Home is to be released April 2021. Jason Wright is also the President of the oddball foundation, a Foundation dedicated to spreading awareness of social justice issues through art, particularly advocating for those affected by mental illness.

On Wednesday, March 17, we welcome John Mulrooney, poet of many hats.

John Mulrooney is a poet, filmmaker and musician living in Cambridge, MA. He is author of If You See Something, Say Something from the Anchorite Press and co-producer of the documentary The Peacemaker, from Central Square Films. He serves as poetry editor for Boog City. He records and performs regularly with a number of musical groups in the greater Boston area. He is Associate Professor in the English department at Bridgewater State University. His work has appeared in Fulcrum, Pressed Wafer fold’em zine, Solstice, the Battersea Review, Poetry Northeast, spoKe, Let the Bucket Down and others.

March 10: Timothy Gager Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, March 10, we welcome Timothy Gager, who is celebrating the release of his latest poetry collection.

Amazon's Number One Bestselling Author in five categories, Timothy Gager has published sixteen books of fiction and poetry. His latest, 2020 Poems, is his ninth of poetry. Timothy hosted the successful Dire Literary Series in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 2001 to 2018, and as a virtual series starting in 2020. Timothy was the co-founder of The Somerville News Writers Festival. He has had over 600 works of fiction and poetry published, of which seventeen have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His work also has been nominated for a Massachusetts Book Award, The Best of the Web, The Best Small Fictions Anthology and has been read on National Public Radio.

February 17: zaji Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On Wednesday, February 17, we welcome zaji, another Stone Soup first timer.

zaji (pseudonym) is a published freelance writer and author. She earned her B.A. in English and M.S. in Journalism (magna cum laude) from Iona College, and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She published When We Were One, her first novel, which was reviewed and recommended by USA Today as a “must-read”; a book of poetry, Words…Loving Emotions; and “Lights on a Cave Wall” for the anthology Making the Hook-Up. She independently published her short stories, “The Letters,” “A Fine Day on Church Street,” and “They Came Like Us.” zaji is working on her second fiction novel as well as several short stories, and is penning a memoir, In the Space of Scattered Memories, which shares random snippets of her life as a Jamaican immigrant. Her micro fiction, “The Highway,” was published in Goddard College’s literary journal, The Pitkin Review. She also received honorable mention in Writer’s Relief’s First Annual Peter K. Hixson Memorial Scholarship award for short prose. When not writing, she can be found playing piano, acting, or steeped in philosophical discourse about the nature of existence.

January 13: Jon Wesick Featurs at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, January 13,Stone Soup moves closer to its fiftieth year of existence with poet and novelist Jon Wesick.

Jon Wesick is a regional editor of the San Diego Poetry Annual. He’s published hundreds of poems and stories in journals such as the Atlanta Review, Berkeley Fiction Review, Metal Scratches, Pearl, Slipstream, Space and Time, Tales of the Talisman, and Zahir. The editors of Knot Magazine nominated his stories “The Visitor” and “A Story for the Rest of Us” for Pushcart Prizes. His poem “Meditation Instruction” won the Editor’s Choice Award in the 2016 Spirit First Contest. Another poem “Bread and Circuses” won second place in the 2007 African American Writers and Artists Contest. “Richard Feynman’s Commute” shared third place in the 2017 Rhysling Award’s short poem category. Jon is the author of the poetry collections Words of Power, Dances of Freedom and A Foreigner Wherever I Go as well as several novels and short story collections. His most recent novel is The Enigma Brokers.

Mignon Ariel King was born in Boston, Massachusetts and has never left her home time zone. An alumna of Simmons University, she worked for a decade as a database assistant by day (at a lot of companies that no artist cares to remember) and as an adjunct English instructor by night. In 2011, King created Hidden Charm Press; she founded Tell-Tale Chapbooks in 2013. Her blog is Making Books Rock, and her latest poetry collection is My Life As A Masque.

Ryk McIntyre has been a presence on the New England poetry scene for decades. He has toured extensively around the continental United States and Canada, appearing on stages as varied as NYC’s New School, Boston’s ICA, Portsmouth NH’s Music Hall, Lollapalooza and the very first “Legends of The Slam” Showcase, at the National Poetry Slam in 2006 in Austin, TX. He has also appeared at countless poetry venues, festivals and house parties. He has been published widely, most notably, in The Worcester Review, Off the Coast, Short Fuse- An Anthology of New Fusion Poets, and Aim for the Head - An Anthology of Zombie Poetry. He has two collections of poetry After Everything Burns (2013 Sargent Press) and The Man at the Door (2018 Broken Head Press). He is currently pursuing a degree, and a second life, in Theater.

December 9: Philip J Curtis Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, December 9, we welcome Stone Soup's new friend Philip J Curtis.

Writer, spoken word artist, and mentor Philip J. Curtis is a native of New York with roots in Jamaica West Indies, who arrived on the Colorado Springs poetry scene in 2006 bringing with him a brand of New York City straightforwardness and swag along with the sensual sun of Jamaica West Indies. Mr. Curtis established luvsaverb.com in 2007 combining his love for music with his poetic flow.

Philip aka Midnight is also an avid community steward. He has facilitated poetry workshops at various high schools, and colleges. He has supported non-profit organizations such as LifeWithoutLupos.org, TESSA, Finding Our Voices, CASA, and Art from Ashes. He is a founding member of Hear Here Poetry and in 2009 he established Poetry 719 on Facebook to foster and support the freedom of self-expression in spoken and written word through community connections, education, and poetic unity for all ages.

December 2: Tony Brown Features at Stone Soup

Tony Brown has been writing for over 50 years, and publishing and performing his work for over 40.

A seven-time Pushcart Prize and two-time Best Of The Net nominee, he has traveled the country, slammed for the Worcester Poets’ Asylum, and organized and hosted many readings and reading series.
