July 12: Len Germinara and Sarah Oktay Feature at Stone Soup Poetry

Stone Soup Poetry will no longer be meeting in person at Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery. Stay tuned for future announcements. On July 12, we feature poetry power couple Sarah Oktay and Len Germinara.

Sarah Oktay, Ph.D. is a scientist by nature and a poet by nurture. She co-founded Spoken Word Nantucket with her husband Len Germinara. For twelve years, they hosted an open mic that featured performances by some of the best poets in the country. She recently published the first of four volumes of essays on the natural history of Nantucket entitled Naturally Nantucket, the Sea: Volume One. She has edited and produced nine books of poetry for other authors and writing collaboratives. Sifting Light through the Darkness is her first book of poetry, her second one will be out in December of 2023. She also contributed two chapters to Women of the Wild Challenging Gender Disparities in Field Stations and Marine Laboratories. For the past two years she has given many performances around the country via Zoom.

Len Germinara has been writing, publishing, and performing his poetry for over four decades. For 17 years he ran spoken word venues in Massachusetts from south of Boston to Nantucket featuring some of the best poets in the country. Len has been a feature on WCAI-NPR in Massachusetts and Writers on the Air in Sacramento CA. Len has been published in numerous national journals and publications. Paul Skiff creates beautifully complex multimedia forms of art that startle our expectations. Based on use of the live voice, incorporating exaggerations and distortions of technology, Paul’s unique combinations of writing, music, poetry and visuals invite human sensuality to flourish. Full of stark moods, loaded with intelligent laughter, led by the force of spoken words, his visions lull or exhilarate by turns packed with aesthetic surprise. Pervasive technology we take for granted, the microphone, the image projector, often barely keep up with the highly innovative forms Paul composes and sets off. May 31: Carol Weston and Margaret Wesel Feature at Stone Soup Poetry

Stone Soup Poetry will no longer be meeting in person at Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery. We will be meeting online for the foreseeable future. To celebrate the last day of Stone Soup's anniversary month, join us tonight on May 31 as longtime Stone Soup friends Carol Weston and Margaret Wesel give us a double feature online.

 

Carol Weston's history as a poet is linked to such figures as Jack Powers, John Wieners, Robert Lowell, Allen Ginsburg, and Carl Solomon (to whom Allen Ginsburg's "Howl" was dedicated). Her credentials include being poetry editor of the Impressions Workshop. She was published in the Farleigh Dickinson Journal, alongside Donald Justice, Phillip Levine, and Anne Sexton. She is also the author of “What the Poet Expects of Himself,” an essay published in the Tufts Review. Married to John Galloway, science teacher at Endicott College, she taught for ten years at the Chestnut Hill School.

She read alongside Jack Powers and Allen Ginsberg in 1973 in the former Charles Street Universalist Church. In the Winter of 1983, she was asked by Powers to feature in Boston's City Hall along with John Wieners. On May 1, 2011, Carol performed her poem "Peace Fire" alongside musician Jon Voight for Stone Soup Poetry's 40th anniversary celebration and tribute to Jack Powers, Stone Soup's late founder. In 2013, she was one of the panelists for "Stone Soup Poetry: A Retrospective," presented at the Massachusetts Poetry Festival in Salem, Massachusetts.

Her poetry credits include The Farleigh Literary Review, BOMB, Stone Soup Anthology 2003, Spoonful, Stone Soup Presents: Fresh Broth and the anthology dedicated to John Wieners, The Blind See Only This World. Her chapbook, Spirals, Whorls Sutures, Septa, was published by Stone Soup Poetry in 1978.

Margaret Wesel was born in Pennsylvania and raised on the Island of Guernsey in the British Channel Islands. Having lived in the Boston area for decades, she is now involved in furthering the cause of general health.

April 26: Stone Soup Says Goodbye to the Assemblage Gallery and to Bil Lewis

After this April Stone Soup Poetry will no longer be meeting in person at Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant.  Appropriately, tonight on Wednesday, April 26 from 7:00 to 9:00, we will also be saying goodbye to Bil Lewis, who is departing the Boston/Cambridge area for a farm in Idaho.

Bil Lewis is a Computer Scientist and has worked in research and taught most of his life, most recently doing Genetics Research at MIT. He has taught at Stanford and Tufts Universities and worked for FMC, Sun Microsystems, and Nokia Data. Bil is a Past District 31 Governor (Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island), an Eagle Scout, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, and a Patriotic Citizen of the United States. Bil is currently performing and teaching High School over Zoom as James Madison, 4th President of the United States. He is using his skills to talk about what is important in life.

 

Bil is the very epitome of sober, serious, introspective poetry.

April 12: Stone Soup In-Person All-Open Mic

Stone Soup Poetry returns for an-inperson show on Wednesday, April 12 from 7:00 to 9:00 at the Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located in Boston on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant. It will be an all-open mic night, and everyone is welcome.

Free admission but donations for features are appreciated.

April 5: Karen Friedland Features at Stone Soup Poetry

In addition to online gatherings, Stone Soup Poetry is now meeting in person every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery. More gallery shows will soon be announced. On March 29, we will be joined online by feature Frances Donovan, who is celebrating the release of her new poetry collection. The next in-person gathering will be on April 12.

Karen Friedland’s poems have been published in the Lily Poetry Review, Nixes Mate Review, One Art, and others. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, received the 59th Moon Prize from Writing in a Women’s Voice, and had a poem hanging on the walls of Boston’s City Hall. Her books of poems are Places That Are Gone and Tales from the Teacup Palace. She lives in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston with her husband and three pets. Karen is living with incurable, inoperable ovarian cancer.
