July 14: Andrew K. Peterson Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On Wednesday July 14, poet Andrew K. Peterson closes out June for Stone Soup.

Andrew K. Peterson is the author of five poetry books, most recently A Blue Nocturne Notebook (Spuyten Duyvil Press, 2021). His 2017 chapbook The Big Game Is Every Night was mailed to the White House as part of a collective protest alongside publications from the Locofo Chaps series. A previous chap bonjour meriwether and the rabid maps (Fact-Simile Press) was featured in an exhibition on poets’ maps at the University of Arizona’s Poetry Center. His poetry was also included in The Earth Archive exhibit at RISD Museum. In 2017 he helped co-wrangle at the Boston Poetry Marathon. A co-founding editor of the literary journal summer stock, he lives in Boston.

June 30: Patricia Carragon Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On Wednesday June 30, poet, novelist, editor and publisher Patricia Carragon closes out June for Stone Soup.

Patricia Carragon’s fiction piece "What Has to Happen Next" has been nominated for Sundress Publications Annual Best of the Net Anthology. Her poem "Paris the Beautiful" won Poem of the Week from great weather for MEDIA. She was nominated by Bear Creek Haiku for a Pushcart Prize. Her latest books from Poets Wear Prada are Meowku and The Cupcake Chronicles and her debut novel, Angel Fire, is from Alien Buddha Press. Patricia hosts Brownstone Poets and is the editor-in-chief of its annual anthology. She is an executive editor for Home Planet News Online. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

June 23: Russell DuPont Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On Wednesday June 23, Russell DuPont features as Stone Soup officially marches into summer.

Russell DuPont is the author of two novels (King & Train and Waiting for The Turk). He is also the author of several chapbooks (Up in Wisconsin, Travels with Kinsley, There is No Dam Now at Richford) as well as two books of poetry (Winter, 1948 and Establishing Home Plate). His poetry has been published in various literary magazines, including The Albatross, The Anthology of South Shore Poets, Re-Side, Oddball, JerryJazzMusician, Adelaide Literary Magazine, Rye Whiskey Review; and his story, “The Corner,” appears in the anthology Streets of Echoes. His journalism has appeared in The Dorchester Community News, The Melrose Free Press and The Patriot Ledger. His novel, Waiting for the Turk was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Books 2019 Award. He is also a photographer, painter and printmaker whose works have been widely exhibited and are in public and private collections, including The Boston Public Library; Brigham and Women’s Hospital; and The Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

May 26: Gary Hicks Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday May 26, we end our celebration of Stone Soup's 50th anniversary (for now) with the return of Gary Hicks.

Gary Hicks has been active in the politics of the left since the 1960s. He has been at various times, an educator, a community organizer, and a cultural worker. In the early 2000s Hicks worked as a substitute teacher in Boston before retiring to the west coast in 2009. He has been writing poetry since 1983 and is the author of A Pen Is Like a Piece. You Pick It Up. You Use It.

May 12: John Landry Features at Stone Soup Poetry

John Landry with Arlene Stone

On Wednesday May 12, we continue our celebration of Stone Soup's 50th anniversary with John Landry, one of Stone Soup's many surviving dignitaries form the days of its founder, the late Jack Powers.

John Landry was born in New Bedford and served as its poet laureate (2007-2010). He ran several poetry reading series there over the decades. He has survived as a quahogger, scallop shucker, factory worker, warehouseman, librarian, health educator, and teacher. He was a regular participant in Stone Soup readings organized by founder Jack Powers from the 1970's through the 1990's. At the invitation of Gwendolyn Brooks, he read at the Library of Congress.

Landry was enlisted as a contributing editor for the 50th anniversary anthology of San Francisco's BEATITUDE in 2009, and for the Spring 2018 Cape Cod Poetry Review. His own work has appeared in a wide array of publications in the US and abroad. During a campaign of civil disobedience concerning homeless services, AIDS awareness, and the Iran-Contra scandal, he was arrested at the Reagan White House. At the time, he was working with the Community for Creative Non-Violence, helping to run the largest homeless shelter in the country (2 blocks from the U.S. Capitol).

May 1: Stone Soup Celebrates it's Fiftieth Anniversary with Deta Galloway!

Join us for a special three hour Stone Soup open mic this Saturday, May 1st, with Deta Galloway returning for an extended feature.

Deta Galloway was born in Kingston in the Jamaica West Indies. She emigrated to America at eighteen years of age to live with American husband and study medicine. She is educated in professional nursing, human services and management, and currently specializes in behavioral nursing.

Her art life has been a central focus of her emotional and spiritual development. It has been a driving force in the way she has practiced Nursing and cared for families from all walks of life, It is healing, compassion, and empowerment throughout the life stages. She has lived and traveled deeply into the Southern States and lived for the last eighteen years in Georgia.

Deta began writing poetry at thirteen and has been published in several anthologies and journals. She has performed with poets such as Etheridge Knight, Josephine Miles, Galway Kinnell, W. S. Merwin, Hayden Carruth, Gwendolyn Brooks, Yusef K, Brother Blue, Tom Oleary, and Elizabeth Mckim.and others. She has read her work for numerous radio station including Radio Jamaica, (Subsidiary of the BBC). Her artwork has been exhibited and collected in museums both in the United States and Africa.

April 21: Gloria Monaghan Features at Stone Soup Poetry

Gloria Monaghan is a Professor of Humanities at Wentworth University. April 7: John Roche Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, April 7, we welcome poet and organizer John Roche.

John Roche lives in Placitas, New Mexico, helping his wife Jules Nyquist run Jules’ Poetry Playhouse, edit Poetry Playhouse Publications, and hosts the monthly Kaktus Poetry open mic. He taught Literature and Creative Writing for decades at various colleges, retiring from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2019.

Roche was formerly President of Just Poets in Rochester, NY, member of the board of BOA Editions, chief organizer of the Black Mountain North Symposium, and an instigator of the annual Cloudburst Council poets' retreat in the Finger Lakes. Along with editing the five-volume Poets Speak series and other anthologies (including Mo' Joe), his own poetry collections include On Conesus, Topicalities, Road Ghosts, and The Joe Poems: The Continuing Saga of Joe the Poet. His newest book is Joe Rides Again: Further Adventures of Joe the Poet (FootHills Publishing 2020).

March 31: Coleen T. Houlihan Features at Stone Soup

On Wednesday, March 31, we welcome the long awaited return of poet Coleen T. Houlihan.

Coleen T. Houlihan began her career in writing on a picturesque day in a quaint Connecticut town. An only child who loved to read, her afternoons were often spent home leafing through dusty volumes passed down from her grandfather. Or she could be found in the local library, covertly reading all the books she'd been warned against such as Wifey by Blume or Go Ask Alice, salacious writing perfect for the budding adolescent. At Wellesley College, she focused on short stories and poetry, receiving her BA. She has featured at several poetry venues such as: Stone Soup, Best Sellers, A Tapestry of Voices, Sherman Café and the Walden Poetry Series. She has published poetry in Main Street Rag, Poesy, Bellowing Ark, The Alewife, The Wilderness House Literary Review, Ibbetson Street Press, Spoonful: A Gathering of Stone Soup Poets, MoJo! February 17: zaji Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On Wednesday, February 17, we welcome zaji, another Stone Soup first timer.

zaji (pseudonym) is a published freelance writer and author. She earned her B.A. in English and M.S. in Journalism (magna cum laude) from Iona College, and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She published When We Were One, her first novel, which was reviewed and recommended by USA Today as a “must-read”; a book of poetry, Words…Loving Emotions; and “Lights on a Cave Wall” for the anthology Making the Hook-Up. She independently published her short stories, “The Letters,” “A Fine Day on Church Street,” and “They Came Like Us.” zaji is working on her second fiction novel as well as several short stories, and is penning a memoir, In the Space of Scattered Memories, which shares random snippets of her life as a Jamaican immigrant. Her micro fiction, “The Highway,” was published in Goddard College’s literary journal, The Pitkin Review. She also received honorable mention in Writer’s Relief’s First Annual Peter K. Hixson Memorial Scholarship award for short prose. When not writing, she can be found playing piano, acting, or steeped in philosophical discourse about the nature of existence.

In a major addition to his features, Skoot has been a 3x Semi finalist National Slam Team.
