Stone Soup Poetry now meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 at our new location, the Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant. On October 23, Toni Bee returns to her Stone Soup stomping grounds to host an open mic and workshop.

Former Cambridge Poet Populist, host of numerous open mic events and workshops, and author of the chapbook 22 Again, Toni Bee is no stranger to the stage or to writer's groups. Everyone should come and bring poems to read, poems to workshop or writing tools so you can participate in what Toni has planned.

Bil Lewis to Receive the 2019 Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

The Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize was created in 2009 by Sophia Marshall in conjunction with Jack Powers and Margaret Nairn.

For 2019 we have selected Bil Lewis. We are grateful for his ongoing contributions to the Stone Soup open mic in it's multiple locations this year.

We hope you will be able to attend the full night of celebration at Stone Soup this Wednesday on October 2, when they'll be presented their prize by Sophia Marshall, who is also that night's featured poet.

October 16: Stratusfier Features at Stone Soup Poetry

Rapper, Poet, Old Soul, and Positive Thinker. This is Stratusfier. A soul-traveling artist that uses rap and poetry to condense light after exploring his own darkness. He has been a coach for the 2016 UMass Boston CUPSI team. He has been published in Oddball Magazine. His features include Comic-Con, Rapping with the Writers, and The Monson Free Library. October 9: April March Penn at Stone Soup Poetry

Stone Soup now meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 at our new location, the Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant. On October 9, April serves dual purpose as both featured poet and tarot reader for this special night in October.

April March Penn is a queer poet who visits Anne Sexton's grave and conducts tarot readings for real and imaginary friends. She is the founder of Ram’s Head Tarot, a Boston-based tarot reading business, and is also the co-author, along with Suzanne O'Toole, of A Tarot Reading Guide for the Haunted Poet. April March's work explores the dissolution of self, relationships, and reality. Her poetry is published in The Offing, The Fem, Prickly Pear, Maps for Teeth, Oddball Magazine, Provocateur, and other literary journals.

October 2: Sophia Marshall to Feature and Present the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

Stone Soup now meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 at our new location, the Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant. On October 2, Sophia Marshall returns to feature and present the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize, an award for a distinguished open micer she helped to co-establish with Jack Powers and Margaret Nairn. The winner will be announced at a later date.

Sophia Marshall is a perceptual poet, characterized by her treatment of the senses. She is a credentialed journalist and music critic, as well as a poet, with credits in several jazz journals and other music publications. She has a blog, The Flash Boston (theflashboston.com), covering local music and culture. She lives in Boston.

On September 18, we continue to celebrate our new location with new words from new voices, starting with poet and artist Cat Dossett.

Cat Dossett is an illustrator and writer based in Boston, MA. She is current Chapbooks Editor of Pen & Anvil Press and has two chapbooks of her own: Laika, about the first dog in space, and Vessel, a slice-of-life comic about a break-up. Her illustrations and writing appear in NERObooks, BURN, Hawk & Whippoorwill, and Sobotka. Find her on social media at @aboutadaughter.

September 11: Martha Boss Features at Stone Soup's New Day and Location!

As of September, Stone Soup Poetry has a new day and location. Starting on September 11, Stone Soup will meet every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 at our new location, the Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant.

On September 11, we welcome Martha Boss as the inaugural feature for your new location. It was Martha's family who was vital in arranging for Stone Soup and Fort Point to discuss working together. As a longtime member of Boston's poetry community and the author of two collections (Twine by March Hare Press and Prayer: Fix My Set from Oddball Magazine Publishing), it's fitting that she be the feature to help start a new era of Stone Soup.

September 5: No Stone Soup This Week. Join Us on September 11

On August 29, Stone Soup Poetry had it's last gathering at St. Paul's Cathedral. We are taking a break post labor day.

August 29: Stone Soup's FINAL Gathering at St. Paul's Cathedral with Ryan "Rat" Travis

For the past year, Stone Soup has mets every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 on 138 Tremont Street in St. Paul's Cathedral's Lawrence room (past the receptionist area after entering the cathedral on the right-side entrance). On August 29, Stone Soup says good by to St. Paul's with a feature by Ryan Travis before we begin meeting in a new location on a new day.

Ryan "Rat" Travis is a Stone Soup veteran with about 20 years in the open mic scene. A modern American haiku master, Rat completed the daunting task of writing 1000 haiku in 100 days. His latest chapbook, Creature Double Feature, is the third in his haiku of horror series snd is a homage to giant monster movies. By day, Rat is an English teacher and during the month of October he can be found scaring the crap out of people with his wife at Fright Kingdom.

Stone Soup's New Day, New Location

Stone Soup's FINAL gathering at the Cathedral of Saint Paul will be this Thursday on August 29.

Stone Soup gatherings will start up  again every WEDNESDAY starting on September 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Assemblage Gallery at 70(a) Sleeper Street, a part of the Fort Point Arts Community. Email me if you want to be a part of that first day.

August 30: Memorial for Bill Barnum

There will be a celebration of Bill Barnum's life held by his family at the First Parish in Brookline (382 Walnut Street in Pierce Hall) on Friday August 30 from 11:15 AM to 1:30 PM. Those interested in attending can join the event's Facebook page here.

To quote the event page:

The service will last approximately an hour, 11:15-12:15, followed by a reception with tea, coffee, and light refreshments. Family and friends will share memories of Bill and selected poems.

There will be dancing!

Please join us in honoring Bill's shining spirit, his artistry, and his love. All are welcome.

Because people may have a hard time taking time off of work for the event (or have other Labor Day weekend plans), Stone Soup will plan a follow-up tribute in September. There will be more updates soon.

Gloria Monaghan is a Professor of Humanities at Wentworth Institute in Boston. She has published three books of poetry, Flawed (Finishing Line Press, 2011, nominated for the Massachusetts Book Award),  The Garden (Flutter Press 2015), and False Spring (Adelaide Press, March, 2019). Her forth book Hydrangea (Kelsay Press) is forthcoming.  Her poems have appeared in Blue Max Review, 2River, Adelaide, Aurorean, Chiron, Nixes-Mate, First Literary Review East, Aries, among others.  In 2018 her poem, “Into Grace” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

May 16: Toni Bee Returns to Stone Soup Poetry

On May 16, we have the long-awaited return of Cambridge's poet celebrity Toni Bee, who is celebrating her first publication.

Toni Bee is a poet, photographer, and one of the founders of Black Lives Matter in Cambridge. The community advocate and mother was the first elected female Poet Populist for the City of Cambridge (2011-2013) She received the 2011 YWCA Cambridge Outstanding Woman Award.

Bee led the Black Lives Matter in Cambridge march along with co-founders and teen leaders in January 2015. She served on the board of directors from 2013-2015 at Cambridge Community Television - after years of being a Neighbor Media journalist at the television station.

Her work has been featured in Oddball Magazine, Stone's Throw and was selected to be part of Best Indie Lit New England, Volume 2. Her chapbook 22 Again is her first collection of poetry.

May 11: Stonecoast Reading at The Dudley Cafe

On May 11, Stone Soup Poetry and The University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast MFA Program team up to retun to the Dudley Cafe in Roxbury for another night of poetry and prose iwth open mic included. Readers include Richard Hoffman, Vanesa Pacheco and main feature Tim Hall.

May 9: Deta Galloway Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On May 9, we welcome back Deta Galloway as part of our forty-eighth anniversary celebration.

Deta Galloway was born in Kingston in the Jamaica West Indies.  She emigrated to America eighteen rs of age to live with American husband and study medicine.  She is educated in professional nursing, human services and  management, and currently specializes in behavioral nursing.

Her art life has been a central focus of her emotional and spiritual development.  It has been a driving force in the way she has practiced Nursing and cared for families from all walks of life, It is healing, compassion, and empowerment throughout the life stages.  She has lived and traveled deeply into the Southern States and lived for the last eighteen years in Georgia.

Deta began writing poetry at thirteen and has been published in several anthologies and journals.  She has performed with poets such as Etheridge Knight, Josephine Miles, Galway Kinnell, M. S. Merwin, Hayden Carruth, Gwendolyn Brooks, Yusef K, Brother Blue, Tom Oleary, and Elizabeth Mckim.and others.  She has read her work for numerous radio station including Radio Jamaica, (Subsidiary of the BBC). Her artwork has been exhibited and collected in museums both in the United States and Africa.

May 2: Stone Soup Appreciation Night

On May 2, Stone Soup will hold an night of appreciation for the long-running. Friends new and old to the venue are invited to come to come and listen, read or share stories on another all-open mic night.

April 27: Stone Soup and Blue Rose Present the Amazing WoMen Poetry Showcase

On April 27, Blue Rose and Stone Soup Poetry join together for National Poetry Month to bring you the Amazing WoMen Poetry Showcase. We return to the Dudley Cafe from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for another Saturday night of open mic poetry and featured performances.  

Poets are invited to present and perform work related to the night's theme: “You don’t know me … but you are me." Join in with our showcase of artists sharing stories of trauma and healing. 

Doors open at 6:00 PM with the open mic starting at 6:30 PM. Food will be available for purchase at the Dudley Cafe, which we encourage you to support.

Jason Wright is the publisher of Oddball Magazine, where his Jagged thoughts poem column runs every Tuesday. Many of these poems were collected into Jason's first book A Letter to the World. His new book, Train of Thought, is forthcoming from Oddball Publishing.

April 11: Meg Smith Features at Stone Soup

Meg Smith is a poet, writer, journalist, dancer and events producer living in Lowell, Mass.

April 4: Charles Coe Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On April 4, Charles Coe makes his long overdue return to our podium and helps us kick off National Poetry Month.

Charles Coe is the author of two books of poetry: All Sins Forgiven: Poems for my Parents and Picnic on the Moon, both published by Leapfrog Press. A third volume, Memento Mori, has just been released by the same publisher. Charles is also the author of Spin Cycles, a novella published by Gemma Media. He was a 2017 Artist-in-Residence for the city of Boston and is an adjunct professor of English at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, where he teaches in the MFA program.


 

March 28: Laurel Lambert Features at Stone Soup Poetry (Rescheduled)

On March 28, we welcome poet and open mic regular Laurel Lambert for her first ever full-length feature.

Writer and artist Laurel Lambert is the author of the recently published chapbook The Sun Exploded in My Mind, currently available at Brookline Booksmith and elsewhere. In 2009 she was the recipient of the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize by Gordon Marshall. Her work has also appeared in Spoonful, Oddball Magazine, Stone's Throw and elsewhere.

March 14: Liza Zayas Features at Stone Soup Poetry

On March 14, we welcome poet and musician Liza Zayas, fresh off of finishing her stint as columnist for Oddball Magazine.

Liza Zayas is a poet, spoken word artist and singer/songwriter who is also known as Luna del Flor. She has been writing, performing, collaborating with House music producers and vocalists and organizing House music parties with others for over 25 years. She has been a feature performer for International Women's Day and V-Day events, and curates events for Women's liberation as well. 

Liza was most recently a weekly contributor at Oddball Magazine with her column, Underground Garden, and is currently collaborating with producers and singers for upcoming music. She continues to write with love, mused by life and its many surprises.

Stone Soup meets every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 on 138 Tremont Street in St. Paul's Cathedral's Lawrence room (past the receptionist area after entering the cathedral on the right-side entrance). On March 4, we welcome poet and open mic regular Laurel Lambert for her first ever full-length feature.

Writer and artist Laurel Lambert is the author of the recently published chapbook The Sun Exploded in My Mind, currently available at Brookline Booksmith and elsewhere. In 2009 she was the recipient of the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize by Gordon Marshall. Her work has also appeared in Spoonful, Oddball Magazine, Stone's Throw and elsewhere.

January 31: Linda Carney-Goodrich Features at Stone Soup

Stone Soup meets every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 on 138 Tremont Street in St. Paul's Cathedral's Lawrence room (past the receptionist area after entering the cathedral on the right-side entrance). On January 31,we close the moutn out with a feature by Boston poet Linda Carney-Goodrich. 

Linda Carney-Goodrich is a writer, teacher, mother and has been among the winners of the Boston Mayor's Poetry Contest, judged by the Boston Poet Laureate in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Her writing has appeared in Wordgathering, Songs of Eretz Poetry Review, Omnivore, Sojourner, Survival News, It's All About Arts, Spare Change, and Classismblog. 

Her poems "Dot Girl" and "Vodka, Beer and Cigarettes" are published in City Of Notions: An Anthology of Contemporary Boston Poems. A former theater artist, Linda performed her one woman shows, The Secret Childhood Diary of a Welfare Mother and My Life in Barbie in a variety of venues throughout New England. She is a former member of Class Acts, Performance Cult and True Story Theater. Linda is owner and operator of Home Scholars of Boston and a long time member of The Hyde Park Poets.

January 10: Stone Soup's Tribute Night to Lynne Sticklor

Stone Soup meets every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 on 138 Tremont Street in St. Paul's Cathedral's Lawrence room (past the receptionist area after entering the cathedral on the right-side entrance). On January 10, Stone Soup gathers to pay tribute to Lynne Stickor.

Lynne Stickor, also known as "The Prize Lady," was a Stone Soup staple as well as a regular host, open mic presence, and regular feature for many years. She passed away in December of 2018. All are invited to participate in the open mic and share poetry or words of any kind for her.
