Bil Lewis to Receive the 2019 Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

The Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize was created in 2009 by Sophia Marshall in conjunction with Jack Powers and Margaret Nairn.

For 2019 we have selected Bil Lewis. We are grateful for his ongoing contributions to the Stone Soup open mic in it's multiple locations this year.

We hope you will be able to attend the full night of celebration at Stone Soup this Wednesday on October 2, when they'll be presented their prize by Sophia Marshall, who is also that night's featured poet.

October 2: Sophia Marshall to Feature and Present the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

Stone Soup now meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 at our new location, the Fort Point Arts Community's Assemblage Gallery, located on 70(a) Sleeper Street, just across from the Barking Crab restaurant. On October 2, Sophia Marshall returns to feature and present the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize, an award for a distinguished open micer she helped to co-establish with Jack Powers and Margaret Nairn. The winner will be announced at a later date.

Sophia Marshall is a perceptual poet, characterized by her treatment of the senses. She is a credentialed journalist and music critic, as well as a poet, with credits in several jazz journals and other music publications. She has a blog, The Flash Boston (theflashboston.com), covering local music and culture. She lives in Boston.

Jan Rowe and James Van Looy to Receive the 2018 Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

The Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize was created in 2009 by Gordon Marshall in conjunction with Jack Powers and Margaret Nairn.

For 2018 we have selected Jan Roe and James Van Looy, without whom Stone Soup may have been further delayed (if not indefinitely) in finding a new home. We are grateful for their ongoing contributions.

We hope you will be able to attend the full night of celebration at Stone Soup this Thursday on December 6, when they'll be presented their prize by Gordon Marshall, who is also that night's featured poet.

December 6: Gordon Marshall to Feature and Present the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

Stone Soup meets every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 on 138 Tremont Street in St. Paul's Cathedral's Lawrence room (past the receptionist area after entering the cathedral on the right-side entrance). On December 6, Gordon Marshall returns to not only feature but present the 2018 Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize.

Gordon Marshall recently published his fortieth book, Here Before. He is a speed poet, writing as quickly as possible, so there is no censorship, and what occurs on the page is what occurs in his mind. His poetry draws much from surrealism and Romanticism, with subject matter taken from music, the body, nature, and urban experience. He is also a journalist and music critic, having performed over forty interviews with national jazz musicians. He has a blog, The Flash Boston (theflashboston.com). He lives in Boston.
 

Lee Varon to Receive the 2017 Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize

The Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize was created in 2009 by Gordon Marshall in conjunction with Jack Powers and Margaret Nairn. A downside to Stone Soup ending prematurely in 2017 was that we were unable to crown a winner in time.

On January 18, we have the pleasure finally awarding the 2017 prize to Lee Varon, longtime participant in Stone Soup's open mic as well as the author of a new poetry collection, Affairs Run In The Family. Gordon Marshall will be on hand to present the award.

September 19: Gordon Marshall and the Jack Powers Prize!

Stone Soup Poetry meets every Monday from 7-9 p.m. every Monday at the Out of The Blue Art Gallery, now at its new location at 541 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square Cambridge, Massachusetts. On September 19, we welcome back poet, author and founder of the Jack Powers Stone Soup Savor Poetry Prize, Gordon Marshall.


Gordon Marshall has been involved with Stone Soup ever since he was 19, in 1983. He gave his first feature reading at Charlie's Tap, in Central Square, Cambridge, in 1986. Years went by where he wrote no poems, or only a few, and then a spate more; then, in 2006, he reached his mature period, writing poems every day, and he has continued writing regularly since then.

He has published 33 books, with Shires Press, in Manchester Center, Vermont, and he is writing a new one currently, The Stars of the City. Gordon is also a music critic. He has many credits with The New York City Jazz Record, All About Jazz, and The Boston Hassle. He as a music blog, The Flash Boston.
